# Margin — Privacy Policy

_Last updated: 19 June 2026_

Margin is a Chrome extension that shows bite-sized news cards in your browser
side panel. It is built to be private by default.

## The short version

- **No account. No tracking. No ads. No analytics.**
- **No backend.** Margin has no servers. Everything runs in your browser.
- Your settings and reading stats stay **on your device**.

## What Margin stores (on your device only)

Using Chrome's extension storage (`chrome.storage`), Margin saves:

- Your chosen topics, theme, and AI-summary preference.
- A cached pool of recent news cards so the panel loads instantly.
- Reading statistics used for the in-app "Insights" view (e.g. articles read,
  day streak, top topics/sources).

This data never leaves your device and is removed if you uninstall the
extension.

## Network requests Margin makes

- **News feeds and images.** Margin fetches RSS feeds and article pages directly
from the news publishers you select (e.g. BBC, The Guardian, The New York
Times). This is done on your device to display headlines, summaries, and a
preview image. Margin does not send your identity or browsing history with
these requests beyond what a normal web request includes.
- **On-device AI summaries (optional).** When enabled and supported by your
device, summaries are generated locally using Chrome's built-in Summarizer
(Gemini Nano). Article text is **not** sent to any server.
- **Margin Plus purchase and license activation.** Upgrading opens a checkout
hosted by **Lemon Squeezy**, our merchant of record — Margin itself never
sees or stores your payment details. Lemon Squeezy collects the payment
information needed to process your order (e.g. name, email, card details)
under its own privacy policy: https://www.lemonsqueezy.com/privacy. After
purchase, you paste a license key into Margin; the extension sends that key
(and a random, non-identifying instance name) to Lemon Squeezy's license API
to activate and periodically re-validate it. No other personal data is sent.
- **Optional "Notify me" email.** If Plus isn't yet purchasable in your build
and you choose to join the waitlist instead, the email address you type is
submitted to Formspree (a third-party form provider) so we can email you
about the launch. See Formspree's privacy policy at
  https://formspree.io/legal/privacy-policy/.

## What Margin does NOT do

- It does not collect or sell personal data.
- It does not track your browsing across sites.
- It does not use third-party analytics or advertising.
- It does not run remote code.
- It never sees or stores your payment details — Lemon Squeezy handles checkout
  as the merchant of record.
